Bone Densitometry/DEXA test
The Bone Density Test, also called densitometry
(DEXA) scan, is to determine the mineral density in your bones. It uses special
X-rays to measure the amount of calcium in the bones. This determines your actual
bone mass. Results can show whether you have osteoporosis, which is preventable,
but unfortunately it is a disease that affects 28 million Americans. Women are affected
4 x more frequently than men. The test is painless, quick, non-invasive, and requires
no preparation. Scheduling this test allows us to help you plan a full life, one
that allows you to enjoy many activities long into your life.
Preparations for the test
It's a simple, painless test that takes only minutes. Getting a DEXA test doesn't
require any special preparation. You don't even have to undress. The DEXA scan passes
over your body, reading your bone density in different areas. Your doctor can explain
the results to you.
If you are already being treated for osteoporosis, your doctor may order a DEXA
test to see how you're doing. A follow-up test may be done about 2 years after an
initial DEXA scan.
